Make Your Own DeIcer

by GettingFreedom on February 21, 2013

Many parts of the country–mine included–are experiencing lots of snow, sleet and ice.  My specific area is all sleet and ice.  And it’s not cool.  Couple that with high winds, and we’ve got a potential of losing our electricity.  I refuse to think about that for too long.

After picking my daughter up from volleyball practice yesterday, I popped into our regular ol’ Walmart (not a supercenter) to get some little propane containers for our Buddy heater, and some Cheerios for the husband.  My women’s group was giving me a lot of grief over not purchasing cereal for my cereal-loving husband.  I figured I would redeem myself. :)  I passed by rack after rack of ice scrapers, deicers, and salt.

Have you seen how much deicers cost?!  Whoa!  And to think, many people probably purchased it, and they have all of the ingredients to make deicer at home for a fraction of the cost!

How to Make DeIcer

Mix 3 parts White Distilled Vinegar with One Part Water.

Simple as that.

Spray on Windshields, door locks, or even concrete surfaces.

Be sure to remove the melted ice slush off of the surface before it refreezes!

Stay warm and safe, friends!

Make Your Own Strawberry Lemonade Concentrate

by GettingFreedom on February 19, 2013

After scoring a great deal on strawberries, I had to figure out how I would use them all up before they went bad.  I dehydrated strawberries {a couple of dehydrator’s full!}, we ate some, and I finally made some Strawberry Lemonade Concentrate that’s been on my list of things to do for years now.

I have to say, it’s rather amazing to pull out some strawberry lemonade in the middle of winter and enjoy a glass!  It felt a bit like summer–or was that the crazy 60° weather we’ve been having? :)

This Strawberry Lemonade Concentrate recipe is meant to be water bath canned, but you can freeze it if you wish.

Strawberry Lemonade Concentrate

Yield: 3 Quarts

Strawberry Lemonade Concentrate

Ingredients

  • 6 cups strawberries
  • 4 cups lemon juice {fresh squeezed is best}
  • 4 cups sugar

Instructions

  1. Puree strawberries in a food processor or blender.
  2. Combine strawberry puree and lemon juice in a large pot.
  3. Add in sugar and stir together.
  4. Heat mixture to 190°, do not let it boil!
  5. Ladle hot strawberry lemonade mixture into sterilized canning jars, leaving ¼ inch headspace.
  6. Remove any air bubbles.
  7. Wipe the rims and add on the canning lids and rings.
  8. Process in a water bath for 15 minutes.

Homemade Taco Seasoning

January 28, 2013

The last few years have been entertaining to look around my home and see what items I can make on my own instead of relying on the grocery store.  It’s amazing to me that with a simple mind-shift, I view everything so differently now. Pre-made seasonings are no exception.  Sure, buying a packet is pretty [...]

Thanksgiving is such a great time of year! Families and friends gather together and share what they’re thankful for. Easy Pear Crisp

I often forget just how much my family loves pears.  Every year I wish I would purchase more than I did the year before, it just never seems to be enough! This year was definitely no exception!  I purchased 20 pounds from Azure Standard with the intent of canning some pear butter.  Thankfully I was [...]

Typically we tend to not make that big of a deal out of Halloween.  It’s just one of those holidays that’s odd to me.  With that said, last year a couple of friends and I got together and put on a Halloween Party at my home.  It was a blast and a way for me [...]

Thumbnail image for Almond Pear Scones {Sugar Free!}

With my last Azure Standard order we got 20# of pears.  We love pears as much as the next person, but pears tend to go downhill pretty fast.  In an effort to use them quickly, I started looking for various recipes with pears.  In this quest I decided that I wanted to attempt a pear [...]

Home Canned Vegetable Soup

September 25, 2012

Oh fall, how I love these cool nights, changing colors, all things pumpkin, and soup. Yes, soup. My husband could live off of it, and honestly, so could I.  It warms the soul after a tiring day and keeps a body warm on chilly nights. Something a lot of people don’t realize about us is [...]
