Welcome to another edition of Salvaged Sunday, where we make the most of our trash!
This week I’m sharing an idea that a friend found on Pinterest and I knew I had to try it. It still needs a little bit of tweaking to fit our taste–but we’ve still enjoyed it nonetheless.
How to Can Grape Juice
I found some grapes that were on manager’s special at our local grocer for 79¢ a pound! Hard to beat that price, but they needed to be used quickly {and I snatched up almost $6 worth!}. We ate a lot of them, but the rest I canned and made homemade grape juice. Soooo good! Although, I think I will play around with the sugar content.
Make the most of your abundance of grapes and make your own grape juice. Easily!
Ingredients
- Ingredients per quart jar:
- 1/3 cup Sugar
- 1 ½ Cups Grapes {washed, stems removed}
- Scant 4 Cups Boiling Water
Instructions
- Prepare your quart jars and lids.{You can see a tutorial on how to sterilize your jars and lids here}
- Using a funnel and ladle, pour sugar and whole grapes into hot jars.
- Fill your jars with boiling water making sure to leave ½ inch of headspace.
- Cover with lids and rings.
- Pressure can for 10 min. at 5 pounds of pressure.
- Allow to cool overnight before testing the seals on the lids.Refrigerate any that have not sealed properly.
Your turn! What did you salvage from the trash?

I was just talking to my husband the other day that I needed to find a homemade grape juice recipe…and just stumbled on your website from another blog. Pinned it! And now following you on FB. Feel free to check out my blogs. We are working on becoming debt-free as well…no longer being a slave to our lenders! Nice to meet you! =)
@Jen @ Gricefully Homeschooling, Will do!
Thank you for pinning! It’s one of those recipes that is so easy, you wonder how it could possibly work. But, it does!
For the grapes, is that cups or pounds? Also, how many/what size jars did you use?
Thanks!
@Lisa, The recipe above is for each quart jar. As for the grapes, it’s cups. So 1½ cups grapes per quart jar.
Greetings Ladies, thank you for posting this article. I did this about 50 years ago when I found wild grapes growing on our place. Yeah smile! I think I used about a cup of sugar and a cup of grapes in those jars but we enjoyed every drop. Those tiny little wild grapes were a pain to work with but the jelly was good too. It seems to me that the juice recipe suggested that I let them set for at least 2 weeks before I opened any of them and then I strained and mashed the grapes some more as I decanted the juice into another jar. Playing with the sugar, yes. And might be a spot or two of honey instead might be good too. Thanks for letting me share a fond memory ….
@Charla Schapfel, We have a ton of wild grapes on our place. My husband LOVE Wild Grape Jelly. I never even thought to use wild grapes in place of the store bought ones. Thank you for the tips! We drank our juice right away {well, a couple quarts} and it was good. But, I think that letting them sit would be even better!
Thanks! That sounds very easy.
Wow, what a great idea. We go through soo much juice with my two-year-old son. He really wouldn’t mind the sweetness or anything else, he just loves fruit. What a fantastic idea.
