Something about a bowl made of bread has always intrigued me, even as a kid. As an adult, I never gave it much thought to try and make them, they were just too intimidating.
Now that I have made them, I’m sad that I’ve waited so long! They’re a cinch, and they add that special touch that makes you feel like you’re at a restaurant in your own home.
Fill it with a hot, piping scoop of soup {one of our faves? Broccoli Cheese Soup!}, or fill with your favorite dip.
Bread Bowls aren't just for restaurants. They're easy to make at home, and add that special touch!
Ingredients
- 2 Cups plus 4 Tbsp. warm water
- 4 tsp butter, softened
- 6 ½ cups flour
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- 3 tsp salt
- 2 pkg yeast (or if you are using bulk 5 ½ tsps)
Instructions
- In your mixer bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water and add in the sugar, salt, and butter.
- Add in the flour, and mix until combined.
- Once mixed, let your Kitchenaid knead your dough for about 5 minutes.
- Let rise until double.
- Punch dough down. Form dough into balls, roughly the size of your fist.{I was able to get 6.}
- Place on a cookie sheet, and let rise until doubled.
- Bake in a 425° oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until it begins to turn brown.
- Let cool for a few minutes so you don't burn your hands. Then cut the slight "bump" off the top, making it flat.
- Using a spoon, scoop out the bread, to within ¼ inch of the edges.
- Brush the outside with an egg white wash. {I added about 1 Tbsp water to a lightly beaten egg white}
- Return to oven, and bake about 5 minutes longer. This will turn the outside golden and crisp, and also seal the inside to help prevent leakage.
- Fill with your favorite soup or dip and Enjoy!

Do you eat the bowl after?
OH, what fun to make! I’m puttin gthis on my menu!
I love this idea and I know my kids will too…thanks!
Can you freeze these? I was thinking of freezing them, after they were baked…and rewarming them in the oven. Would that work?
Thanks for sharing my Samoa Granola Recipe! I’d love to try making these bread bowls sometime!
Hi. Looks wonderful! Just double checking-the butter is 4 tsp and not 4 Tbs., right? Thanks!
I remember they had these in my elementry school, i don’t think i liked theirs but i’m willing to try making it myself to see how it goes i’m a very picky eater.. i’m thinking of using french bread instead to make the bowl though!
Thanks for the recipe! Just for clarification, I thought there was 2 1/4 teaspoons of yeast in a package, which would mean there is 4 1/2 teaspoons in two packages, not 5 1/2 like in the recipe? Is this a typo? Or have I been under-yeasting all of my bread?
What do you do with the bread you scoop out from the insides? Anything creative?
