Starting the Garden

by GettingFreedom on March 16, 2010

I’m definitely not as on top of the garden this year as I was last year.  I finally got around to starting some of our seeds over the weekend.  Good thing too, as our plant date is coming up in April!  If you are unsure of when your plant date is, check  here.

As I’ve mentioned before, this year our garden is going to be much smaller than last year.  We have a vacation to Florida planned in May, the baby is due in July, and in the midst of it all we are preparing for major construction to begin on our home.  There really isn’t a lot of spare time for a garden–but I wouldn’t be happy without one. :)

This is what we’ve planted in pots:

  • Instead of 40 tomato plants (4 separate varieties), we are looking at more along the lines of 15 tomato plants, 2 different varieties.
  • We will do about the same number of pepper plants,  roughly 15 green pepper and 10 red pepper–which is new to us this year.  All of my red pepper seedlings were annihilated last year by a random varmit.  In addition to these peppers, I will also grow jalapeno peppers and Chinese 5 color.
  • 8 Cabbage and 8 Broccoli Plants.
  • Lavendar
  • Chamomile

Planted in the ground:

  • Lettuce; planted one round, have 3 more to go.
  • Radishes; new to us.
  • Peas; new to us.  I’m excited about these.  We eat a lot of peas!
  • 3 kinds of carrots; One of these I got for free.  These aren’t in the ground yet–but they need to be!

Waiting for no frost:

  • Dill
  • Cilantro
  • Country Sweet Corn
  • Indian Corn
  • Popcorn; I can’t wait for this!
  • Green Beans
  • Okra
  • Missouri Watermelon
  • Ground Cherry
  • Various Flowers

Squee! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am wanting to grow a few plants this year, a container garden on my patio. I am excited to peruse your links and am greatly inspired!

Wow, for someone who will be so busy in the summer, you’re still planting a lot! Wait until you taste those peas off the vine–I assume they are snow peas. In fact, good luck getting them from the vine into the house, LOL! They are like potato chips, only sweet–you can’t stop at one. There’s just something about the taste of vegetables when they are still warm from the sun!

We were planning our garden last night. We have 3 square foot garden boxes. One is planted with strawberries, which I hope will bear this year. Last year, our garden didn’t do well. We had a very late frost that killed some things and it was just cool all summer. Hoping for better luck this year. But we’ve got a FL trip planned last week of May/first week of June so we’ll have to find someone to water for us.

Oh yay! Love gardening! We have “pulled back” on our garden this year too. Was not able to start plants inside though so I went extravagant and ordered some online! HA! Can’t wait till they come. (There’s a link on my site under Gardening)

glad to see this post as it is a reminder that I have got to get on the ball about my garden. We had great success last year and hope to this year as well. Our favorite thing last year was suagr snap peas. We could just eat ‘em off the vine they were so yummy! We definitely need to plant more of those this year. Hope you have a wonderfully successful garden and thanks for re-inspiring me!
Also, thank you for stopping by to visit me…I am anxious to go check out more of your blog now!

With a new house, this is our first year planting a vegetable garden. You are now my role model. Again.

Thanks for linking! I can’t wait to hear about the popcorn! I saw it in one of my seed catalogs but was a little skeptical.
