A few weeks ago I finally came to the conclusion that my freezers had gotten the best of me. There was no telling what was in them, and my “freezer memory” was becoming rather unreliable. Once upon a time I had a freezer inventory of sorts, which worked but, I didn’t stick with it. I knew I needed to change it up.
We are blessed to have ample amount of freezer space. This has really proven priceless when it comes to storing our harvests, as well as being able to take full advantage of meat sales, and extra bursts of productivity during baking days and Once and Month Cooking Days. Currently we have the freezer with our refrigerator, a chest deep freezer, and an upright deep freeze that we just purchased in December. I wanted to keep the things we used the most in the refrigerator freezer, and consolidate the 2 deep freezers, if possible, for our upcoming beef purchase.
To start, I emptied everything out of our upright freezer, which is our biggest. Since it was a recent purchase, it really wasn’t in that bad of shape, I just needed to know what was in it. As I put things back into the freezer, I wrote them down on a sheet of notebook paper. Then I moved on to the chest freezer, which is located outside in our make-shift pantry. I carried everything inside, and tallied it up on notebook paper as I placed it in the upright freezer. I put off my refrigerator freezer, because I knew there was a lot of cleaning that needed to be done! So glad to finally have accomplished it, though! I did the same process for it, as I did the others. Except, I left basically only breakfast and lunch items in it, as well as our ice packs. Everything else went into our upright freezer.
Once I was done emptying out and reorganizing all of our freezers, I decided to make an Excel Spreadsheet of the contents. I broke the items up into main categories which included:
- Vegetables
- Fruits
- Baked Goods
- Pork
- Beef/Venison
- Poultry
- Fish/Seafood
- Meals
- Potato Products
- Miscellaneous
Under the main categories, I listed specific products such as diced green peppers, roasted green peppers, hamburger, hamburger patties. I got as specific as I could so that I knew at a glance exactly what I had, instead of having to open up my freezer and figure it out. Next to the specific item I wrote how many of it there was. I thought I was done at this point, but I decided to go back and include the location in which said item was located. For the upright freezer, I mentioned the shelf it was on, the drawer, or the door. For the other 2 freezers, I just put Kitchen or Outside, I figured that was specific enough.

This is a look at my complete inventory.

And this one is just a closer look.
Once my list was completely finished, I printed it off and placed in on the front of my upright freezer. There is space after the last column to mark when something is taken out of the freezer. There is also room at the bottom of my inventory list for when I add something in. When the list gets too busy with tallies and marks, it’s time to print out a revised, more current version.
I cannot even believe how much food I had stashed away in my freezers! Seeing it first hand, written out in front of me has been a real eye opener for me and my husband. I’m continually amazed at how blessed we really are! It is also amazing to realize that other than our big beef purchase, which obviously broke the grocery budget for the time being, everything else was purchased out of our regular monthly grocery budget of $300!
This freezer inventory is really working for me!

I love the setup of your inventory list. I really need to do this with mine. I know that I will be surprised to know exactly what I have stashed in there. Maybe I will do that this week! Thanks for the push I have needed for some time now!

What a great idea! I want to do this!

This is just too timely… I was tired of wondering exactly what was in my freezer, and just yesterday inventoried the lot of it. I was also suprized by just how much I actually had! I think I should also get a bit more specific about the contents – like hamburger on my list doesn’t tell me if it is in burgers, pound packages, or pre-cooked packages… great ideas!

Excellent idea! I really need to do this for our chest freezer. I think there is a 2 year old turkey out there, buried in frozen veggies.
I saw an inventory idea that I really like, and I don’t remember where. She put a box for each item, so if she had three packages of frozen peas, she put three boxes next to “FROZEN PEAS” on the sheet. As she used it, she marked it off, so only empty boxes remain in the freezer. Seemed like a good method to keep track.

Wow! That’s a very organized list!
I keep a freezer inventory on my fridge, but it’s definitely not that organized!!

Love your idea! I should take the time to do this.

Very smart!

My list is similar… and is full of scratches and marks and ticks and scribbles… and I have not kept up with it the past bit. That will be one of my projects for when I’m bored after George is born. ahahahahaha!!!

Great job!
Thanks for the reminder that I need to redo my freezer list. I did an inventory about a month ago and I know that things have since changed in my two freezers(over the fridge & a upright).
We are truly blessed!

Great list! Don’t forget freezer room for milk if you’re going to pump…
my freezer is full of milk and not so full of other things LOL

My biggest problem is keeping it updated. I did an inventory last week and have already forgotten to cross things off…and it’s hanging on my freezer!
Maybe a cook from the pantry/freezer challenge is in my future!

I have a freezer inventory as well. I use little boxes to the right of each item. (I think they are from the WingDings font on my computer.) If I have an item I make one slash. When I take an item out I make another slash across the first to make an X.
It works wonderfully when I remember to keep it up date! I have three freezers (we have a large family) so it gets a bit complicated. It only takes not marking something off ONE time and the whole system falls apart!

Shelly–I agree–you miss one thing, one time and everything goes askew! We also have 3 freezers, I just keep the inventory list on one freezer that way I can see everything all at one time.

Good for you. Do you have a system for updating or do you have to print off a new one each time?

Amy– For now I’ve been tallying beside each item when I take something out. At the very bottom of my sheets I have room to add things in, like after I go grocery shopping. When my inventory starts getting full with tallies and marks–I just print off a new one on the back of this one. That way I’m not wasting a ton of paper. Thankfully my husband brings home big stacks of scrap paper from his job!

I did the same thing last month and that is why I was able to spend only $25 a week for this month, totaling $100 (with just a little more spent on bulk baking supplies this month). So, to be fair $132 for this month. Not bad for a family of 7.

Debbie– That is great for a family of 7! I had to stock up on some bulk supplies this month, too. So, we’re hoping to use mostly food out of our pantry and freezer this month to help even out my grocery expenses.

Wow, that’s a lot of work! Definitely pays off, though. We just have the refrigerator freezer, so it’s easier to keep track, but I still need to go through it and update my mental inventory once or twice a month. I wish we had the space for a larger freezer.

Definitely a fantastic tip! I don’t keep a freezer full of stuff but always recommend this to others!

I keep thinking about doing something like this. I need to do a freezer purge and re-stocking before Baby #2 comes next month! Thanks for the tips!
