Making Peanut Butter

by GettingFreedom on May 29, 2009

I finally did it!

My husband is a lover of peanut butter. He can be found eating it by the spoonfuls, right out of the jar. While at Wal-Mart a month or so ago, I found the huge, commercial size peanut butter so I snatched it up. I just knew that it would last us months (I’m thinking it was 4 pounds or something) and I was proud of my bargain. Compared to the smaller containers–it was cheaper by a long shot.

But I was wrong. I was able to make one baked good, and the rest was eaten..by spoonfuls, by either my husband, or my children–who now love this as a snack! While I am not completely opposed to this as a snack, I am at it’s current price.

My solution: Make it! Another one of those things that I really wish I would have made sooner. So easy, and delish, with none of those yucky preservatives.

I used Gayle’s recipe:

1 ½ cups unsalted, roasted peanuts
2 tablespoons peanut oil (I was out, so I used corn oil)
¼ teaspoon salt
Honey to taste
. I tried it without this at first, and DH would have nothing to do with it. So I ended up adding in enough to satisfy him–probably a 1/4 cup or so (!). Hopefully we can get the amount down gradually.

Add everything into your food processor and blend away.

Don’t mind what my container says–I ran out of room. :)

After a few minutes of processing, you will get this:

It does have a slightly different texture than the store bought stuff. But, I think it tastes so much better and it is cheaper! That container of peanuts cost me just over $2 and will make 2 batches, and if you factor in the prices of all the other ingredients you are looking at just over $1/batch for All Natural Peanut Butter. I never did measure how much it makes, but Gayle says it is about 11 oz.

Definitely a bargain, and a frugal, nutritious choice!

I tried this once and no one in my house wanted to eat it…it was gritty. I am inspired to try again now.

Instead of using a blender to make my peanut butter I grind the peanuts in my flour mill until they are a consistency of flour. Then I gradually add enough peanut oil to blend. I add a little salt and just a touch of honey. You can also make butter out of walnuts, almonds, pecans, macadamia nuts and hulled sunflower seeds. Just do it the same way as peanut butter. It’s really yummy.
