I only plan from what I have on hand. I have written menus for each season, that include things on sale in those season as well as produce fresh from my garden. I also wrote a menu that uses only items from my pantry for times when I don't have ingredients in my fridge or freezer.

Yes, menu planning and coupon clipping is a MUST in saving money at the grocery store! Menu planning also helps you use leftovers, so food is not wasted! Thank you for this article! I am a mom of four teens (well, three teens and an 11 year old) and I try to post a weekly menu and housecleaning "blessing" each day. I love your site! THank you!

DEBT FREE JOURNEY
debtfreethroughchristwhostrengthensme.blogspot.com

I love menu planning! :D I don't tell dh and the kids though. I like to torture them. They will ask "What's for dinner?" I say, "Food". :D It kills them! Actually, dh finally wised up and sometimes looks on my blog. LOL!

Thanks for the tips! Very helpful :) I usually do weekly meal planning because I have to be in the mood for stuff but I always plan for what we eat and shop the sales - works all the way around. My brain just doesn't function a whole month at a time :) Maybe someday...

My DW uses a calendar and then I grocery shop based on the weeks menu. We try and eat leftovers for lunches and not waste any food. It can be hard with some picky eaters in our family, but we try.

I do it a bit differently -- and save $$ in the process. I grocery shop according to what's on sale...they usually have things in each category on sale (meat, dairy, veg, fruit...etc) Then when I get it all home, and as I'm putting it away, I make a list of what meals I could make out the the groceries I just bought (and what's in my cupboard/freezer too)...Then I organize that into breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks. That way, seeing a list on my fridge tells me that I HAVE the ingredients in the house, so I don't need to fight the kids when they say, "I'm Hungry..." or I don't need to get something out to eat when I know I have the ingredients in the house.

Since I started menu planning again it has saved us money (not to mention saved me some stress!).

I am playing around with whether to have a theme night (like Breakast, Chicken, Crockpot, Mexican food, etc.) or just go with what I'm doing. I like a couple of meatless meals (like lentils) a week too.
