Homemade Tortillas

by GettingFreedom on February 4, 2009

One of the main questions I get, are “You make your own tortillas?”. Why yes, I do!

It all started when I was out of them one day, and I was dying for Mexican food. I began the search for a recipe, and to see just how hard it would be. Believe it or not, the hardest part about them, is getting them rolled out. And that isn’t too difficult.

I came across this recipe on Hillbilly Housewife and I love it! We use half white flour and half wheat flour and it is utterly delicious!
Homemade Tortillas

4 cups white or whole wheat flour or half each
1-1/2 teaspoons salt
1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/3 cup shortening
1 to 1-1/4 cups water
Mix together the dry ingredients, and cut in the shortening with a fork. Once crumbly add in water until a dough ball forms. If it is dry add just a smidge more water. Then, knead about 20 times on the counter. I have always kneaded on a floured surface, but next time I will try an oiled surface. After kneading, let rest in a bowl for 10 minutes.
After it has rested, separate your dough into about 10-12 little balls and roll in a little flour to coat the outside.

Then you can either place a ball in between two pieces of waxed paper and roll out to desired thickness, or you can use a Tortilla Press.

I line it with wax paper anyway so that it doesn’t stick, press it down and voila…there is my tortilla. Do this a few times and you have lots of tortillas!

The only thing left to do is to cook these babies…and eat them! I put mine on a hot, dry griddle and cook away. Flip when it starts to brown.

I think I may have actually fried these in butter, I see bubbles…but I usually do it dry.

These will only keep in the refrigerator for a couple days, but you can freeze them. This recipe is easily doubled so you can make a bunch, and just freeze what you don’t need at the time.

TOTAL COST: Under $1 for 12 Wheat Tortillas

I love tortillas and I have always wanted to learn how to make them from scratch. Thank you for the tutorial. I am going to have to try and find me one of those tortilla presses.

Wow, that tortilla press is awesome! I was thinking rolling them out would be a pain, but the press is what makes it a snap, I’m sure.

Pray tell, where did you get your tortilla press? I’ve never seen one and I agree – rolling them out is the hardest part. I make ours, too, and they are so good! I use the recipe from the “More With Less” cookbook and it’s a little different than yours… I’ll have to try your recipe.

Miriam-

My wonderful husband bought mine for me for Christmas. I’m not sure where exactly he got it, but I found one on Amazon for a pretty decent price. I’ve provided the link to it in my post if you want to get one.
I would love to try your recipe as well. Do share!

I might have to get that tortilla press. They are so easy to make, and yummy, but anything that requires me rolling something out just puts me off.

Thanks for this recipe! We have been making tortillas from a mix that you add water to but I have been looking for a good homemade recipe!

I saw a tortilla press last week at Fiesta, a Hispanic store here in Fort Worth, Texas, for about $8.00. I never tried using a tortilla press for flour tortillas, only for corn tortillas. I’m definitely going to try it. Thanks for the recipe.

I have been thinking about making these lately. This may be the push I needed.

BTW, I love Dave Ramsay’s book too. I just found your site and am really interested in reading more posts on how you cut back.

Hi,
Just found your site and I love it! We’ve been slowly working off all of our debt for two years now and Lord willing we will be debt free this year.
A few days ago the Lord reminded me of how much we waste and we’re working on improving that.
The tortillas look great. Our local independent (read that as small) grocer ordered a press for us and I’m looking forward to trying it out.
God bless,
Knittin-Ma

Thanks for putting this on Gayle’s Grocery Cart Challenge site. I never would have found you otherwise.
Clicked your link since it’s been in the back of my mind I would like to try making homemade tortillas. I recently tried the kind that are rolled at the store and you have to bake them. Awesome, but it got me thinking, I bet homemade are even better. Can’t wait to try!
Also working to get debt free and learning ways to save along the way. I’ll be back to your site!

Sheer genius! We use tortillas all of the time. I saw them being made on the Food network the other day and wondered if I should try. I make my own bread to save money. Why not tortillas?
Thanks a million!

I made tortillas once but I found it to be too time consuming for my liking. Although, one of those presses would probably speed things up greatly! Your tortillas look wonderful!

Taya-
i know what you mean about it being time consuming. They can be, but I noticed that the more I made them, the quicker it was.

You may try making multiple batches so that you can just freeze and use instead of making them everytime. Also, that press helps.. A LOT!!

I’m exciting to try these out! Need to put a press on the shopping list too. Just wondering, can you freeze the dough balls?

Reply

Phoebe February 9, 2009 at 5:27 pm

Olivia-

You know, I’m not quite sure. I would think that maybe you could, because you can freeze cookie dough balls. The only hang up would be that they would have to thaw completely so that you can press or roll them.

I hate to use shortening…can you substitute butter or something else? Please let me know, they look delicious and it's something I have never tried before. Just recently became a subscriber of your blog and love all the info. Thanks for sharing!

Christine–

I'm not the biggest fan of shortening these days, either. I've never tried it, but I would think that butter or lard would work just fine. Lard would be a closer substitute than the butter
(in my opinion)–but I don't see why the butter wouldn't work. Just make sure that it is softened a little bit before you use it.

Thank you for subscribing! I truly apppreciate it. Let me know if you have any more questions. :)
