Biscuit Mix Substitute

by GettingFreedom on February 27, 2009

After posting the Blueberry Streusel recipe, there were a lot of people inquisitive about the homemade biscuit mix.

You may fall out of your chair by how easy and frugal it is.

Homemade Biscuit Mix

1 cup flour

1 1/2 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

1 Tbsp shortening

Mix all of your dry ingredients together making sure that they are fully incorporated. Then add the shortening and cut in until crumbly. This is equivalent to 1 cup of Bisquick, so you can use interchangeably.

For bulk purposes:
8 cups flour
1/4 c baking powder
1 Tbsp plus 1 tsp salt
1/2 cup shortening

Because of the shortening, I prefer to store this in an airtight container in the refrigerator. However, I do believe that you can store it at room temperature, but I wouldn’t do it for more than 2 weeks.

For the bulk batch, it comes in under $2, and it will make 40-48 biscuits total.

You are right, this looks easy. I’m thinking I will try it with the black-eye pea soup (I think) you posted a while back.

Thanks for sharing!

Wow! That is super easy.

Just curious though, how many biscuits does one cup of Bisquik make?

If you can use this like Bisquick then it would be very versatile, like for pancakes, waffles, biscuits, etc! Cool.

Drea-
I do believe it makes a between 6-8 biscuits. Of course it depends on how big you make them.

Genie-
No–but I really want to! I would probably do a half and half mix at first. I might just do that next week. Or you can, and let me know! ;)
