We have cut every expense to the bone. My husband and I have 4 small children, one who is autistic. We both work opposite shifts so one of us is home with the children. Day care is very expensive here and with an autistic child, you can't just leave that child with anyone. We spend $80 a week on groceries for a family of 6, and that is without coupons. We have a pre-paid cell phone which we purchase the minutes as we need them, and we only have one. The only luxury we have is digital cable because we never have enough left over to go to the movies. The digital cable is a bundel package along with telephone and internet. We have no credit card debt, we use the envelope method of budgeting and we haven't had a vacation in 14 years! Our down fall is that even though we purchased our home at the height of the real estate market, and at that time we got a pretty good deal because the house was a foreclosure. Because of the economy, our property taxes keep going up and our salaries don't, and we just barely pay all our bills and have little to nothing left over to "blow" or to even save. We can't afford to refinance, because our house is now worth less than we paid for it. I am just ready to walk away from everything because the only thing that I can cut back on is cable and I am afraid that won't even be enough to get ahead. I wish every one lots of luck with their journey. As for me, I don't see the economy getting much better and will have to make some tough decisions for my families well being. God Bless

We are on the Dave Ramsey plan too! It has been WONDERFUL! And life-changing. We are hoping to be out of debt by next summer and moving on to Baby Step 3. I've enjoyed reading through your journey!

Your various accounts sound like the Freedom Account suggested by Debt-Proof Living. Little by little we've been saving for all of the gifts, car and home repairs, and vacations we want to have.
Great site!

Very inspiring and helpful story. I'm a big Ramsey fan and I also like crunching numbers. We have a little ways to go, but when you taste the freedom that a budget brings, its hard to turn back.

I found you at 5dollardinners.

Thanks for sharing.

What a great story! It's VERY encouraging!!

My husband and I were in sort of the same situation. We spent the first few years of our life together living off of credit cards, and now we are PAYING for it! I just read "The Total Money Makeover" a couple weeks ago, and LOVED it!! (have you heard of Crown Financial, btw) Now, we need to really put it to work! When we started paying off our debt and not incurring anymore we were in about $22,000! Now, after 3ish yrs, we are only down to $13,000.. I hope to be completely out of debt by the end of this year!!!

Anyhoo, thanks again for your story, I will be following yours and sharing mine on my blog!!

God bless you!

Catie :)

Loved reading your journey. It seems like our entire married life has been starting/restarting this journey! So 2009 begins a new one for me...and loved the Casting Crowns reference--probably my fave album.

Phoebe,
I love reading how other people are on their way to becoming debt free! When we got married, we had almost $30,000 debt, not including our mortgage. We immediately started snowballing. Now, we only have one car payment each month and are well on our way. It's definitely a huge relief to look back and see where you've come from!

We know it's not by our own knowledge, but by the grace of God that we have saved money and gotten on the right track!

Keep up the good work!
Sola gracia,
Lisa
