Homemade Fabric Softener
by GettingFreedom on October 22, 2008
Well,
last week I did homemade laundry soap, so why not do Fabric Softener this week?
This is really easy, and I have noticed that my clothes are just as soft, if not softer than with the commercial fabric softener.
I use an empty baby wipe container. To this I add 2 cups water, an 1 cup vinegar and 2/3 cup conditioner. For one reason or another I always have more conditioner left when my shampoo is all gone. This is a good way to use it up, or you can use it in place of shaving cream! Or, I’ve went to Dollar General and bought Suave Lavendar Conditioner for .75!! It smelled wonderful.
Use a fork, or a wisk and stir it all up until it is incorporated. Don’t get too wild with it, or it will become frothy.
I use an old dilapitated sock that is way beyond wear for my dryer sheet. When I need it, I reach in, ring it out a bit, and throw in the dryer as usual.

One batch will last me about a week, sometimes shortly over. Just depends on how much laundry I have. A batch costs me about .40 to make, so about $1.60/mo. I will say that there is a slight vinegar smell sometimes when I pull the laundry out of the dryer. I don’t know if I just don’t notice everytime or what. But, the vinegar smell does not linger on our clothes.
It works for me!! For more WFMW posts, visit Rocks in My Dryer.

That’s awesome! I use straight vinegar in the rinse cycle of the washer and it works as fabric softener, too. Thanks for the tip!

Yes, this is fantastic! I make my own laundry soap and I’ve been wanting to make my own softener, too. Thanks so much!

I hadn’t heard of that before! I use an Amway product that I spray onto a cloth and toss it into the dryer. I bought that bottle a few years ago – cut it by 50% by adding water to the softener and that thing has lasted me a few years.
Come by my place today to see how you can Cruise through the Holidays, in my WFMW.
Have a Great Day!

I haven’t tried making my own but I want to. Is this safe on all garments or are there some items that it will leave stains on?

momstheword-
You know, I don’t have a definitive answer for you. But, I can tell you that I have never had anything stain from it. The only thing that may even be an issue would be the conditioner, but there is such a little amount, and it is all in the sock.
It is basically the same as a commercial dryer sheet…just a dryer sock.
